Linked to many teams in England over a long period of time now, Morgan Sanson has long been seen as an exciting talent. The midfield of Marseille has been a major part of their rise and improvement under Andre Villas-Boas, with Sanson a major beneficiary of decisions made by the Portuguese manager. With that in mind, then, there is little surprise that moves are being made to try and secure the Frenchman. Known as a creative passer and a high-risk player who also contributes well on the defensive side, his two-way style of play would make an excellent addition to the English top flight.
Various clubs are being linked with a move for the player, including Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Arsenal. Long since linked with the Midlands teams, though, it might be more likely that he winds up arriving in that part of the UK. He played his first game in over a month when he took part in a 2-1 loss to Nimes, and his coach was happy to admit that the interest exists after the game.
Villas-Boas spoke after the shock loss, saying: "We'll see. The transfer window is open, Sanson is a player who is highly rated. Officially, we have not received any offers, unless it happened during the match.
"He is a boy who interests English teams because of his characteristics, and it is possible that something could happen."
Is Morgan Sanson good enough for the Premier League?
With a natural engine and a physical desire to move the ball progressively, he suits the attacking nature of the Premier League. The Frenchman is good at winning fouls and earning his team set-pieces, while also being noted for his ability to move the ball up the pitch with impressive, darting dribbles. Since AVB arrived in Marseille, he has played a key role in the teams ability to step up and compete in Europe once again.
However, Marseille appears to have hit the skids; despite some very impressive early-season form, they have petered into a run of one win in six.
Even as the rivals Paris Saint-Germain looked sloppy, Olympique de Marseille can no longer even dream about winning the title. They have their work cut out even to earn one of the Champions League spots. According to Fivethirtyeight they only have about a three percent chance of making the 2021-22 edition of the Uefa Champions League.
Were the club still to be in with a realistic shout of fighting for the league title, then it could have been possible that the player stuck around until the end of the year.
As Marseille's poor form makes even qualifying for the Champions League unlikely, this means that some key players are likely to depart, Marseille might look to start their rebuild early and cash-in by selling Morgan Sanson during the January transfer window. Despite being a key part of the team since he first signed, Sanson has likely reached a stage where it is now or never if he wishes to get to England and test himself further.
Despite perhaps lacking some height, there is little doubt that Sanson has the playing characteristics to make an important player of himself in the English top-flight.
