Manchester United defender Harry Maguire's efforts to clear his name in the Greece assault case have hit another obstacle as he faces a significant setback.
In 2020, Maguire was convicted of assaulting law enforcement officials, resisting arrest, and attempting bribery following a drunken altercation outside a Mykonos nightclub.
Maintaining his innocence, Maguire has consistently denied the allegations, refuting claims of engaging in a fight with Greek police attempting to intervene in a brawl.
Accompanied by his brother Joe, sister Daisy, and then-fiancée Fern Hawkins, Maguire's defense contends that the situation escalated after his sister was injected with an unknown substance, rendering her unconscious.
An appeal from the Manchester United player was scheduled for Wednesday, eighteen months after the initial case.
However, hopes for a resolution have been dashed due to an ongoing strike by Greek lawyers, delaying Maguire's opportunity to clear his name and prove his innocence.
According to The Guardian, the 30-year-old will likely have to wait longer for the legal process to unfold, as the strike has limited court proceedings to emergency cases only.
"The Greek court drama surrounding Harry Maguire is set to continue indefinitely as the Manchester United defender's hopes of overturning his suspended sentence for his alleged involvement in a Mykonos assault case are put on hold due to a lawyers' strike in the country."
Maguire had been prepared for Wednesday's hearing before an appeals court judge on the island of Syros but has been impacted by the strike, which has disrupted legal proceedings.
Prosecution lawyer Yannis Paradisis confirmed, "The case will be adjourned due to the strike, preventing court proceedings. We expect a new date to be set by the judge tomorrow."
