Liverpool Open Door for Arsenal to Sign Diogo Jota as Arne Slot Loses Faith
10 February, 2025

Arsenal’s search for a clinical striker continues, and they may not have to look beyond Liverpool to find their solution. Reports suggest the Gunners remain interested in Diogo Jota, and Liverpool could be willing to sell—if the price is right—after new manager Arne Slot has grown frustrated with the Portuguese forward.

Arsenal’s Striker Struggles Persist

Despite widespread calls for reinforcements, Arsenal once again failed to land a top-class striker in the transfer window. The lack of a consistent goal-scorer remains one of their biggest weaknesses, a fact Mikel Arteta himself acknowledged.

“We had a clear intention to explore opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact,” Arteta admitted last week. “We are disappointed in that sense but also aware that we only want to bring in certain kinds of players and must be disciplined.”

The Gunners pursued high-profile targets such as Ollie Watkins, Alexander Isak, and Benjamin Sesko, but none of those moves materialized. Now, they could turn their attention to Jota, who was previously on their radar.

Jota’s Future at Liverpool in Doubt

According to Anfield Watch, Arsenal expressed interest in Jota last summer, and that interest remains. The report claims that Liverpool are open to selling the 28-year-old if they receive the right offer.

Jota began the season as Slot’s preferred striker but suffered a rib injury in October, allowing Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz to step up in his absence. Since returning to fitness, Jota has struggled to reclaim his place in the starting lineup and even missed two more league games in January due to another injury setback.

When fit, Jota is arguably Liverpool’s most clinical finisher—more efficient in front of goal than even Mohamed Salah, who requires a higher volume of shots to score. However, with injuries continuing to plague his career, Liverpool may see this summer as the right time to cash in.

Could Arsenal Make a Move?

By the summer, Jota will have just two years left on his contract, raising questions over whether Liverpool will offer an extension. Arsenal’s willingness to bid for 29-year-old Watkins in January suggests they aren’t opposed to signing experienced players who can make an immediate impact.

However, Jota’s injury history presents a major concern. Additionally, Liverpool may demand a premium from Arsenal, given their status as a direct title rival.

With Arsenal still desperate for a proven goal-scorer, Jota could emerge as a real option—but whether Liverpool are willing to strengthen a competitor remains to be seen.
