Liverpool eyeing FA Cup hero Youri Tielemans in midfield rebuild
28 May, 2021

Leicester City fans have endured a wild two weeks. The Foxes watched their team lift their first-ever FA Cup, beating Chelsea 1-0 in the Final on the back of a Youri Tielemans wondergoal. However, they then watched their team fall to pieces and miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification despite being in the top four for much of the campaign. Two back-to-back losses to Chelsea and then Tottenham in the league was enough for the Foxes to see Liverpool sneak past them into third spot, while Chelsea held on as well. This leaves near-favourites Leicester on the outside looking in at UCL football again – and it could be costly.

Foxes fans, then, will be frustrated to hear that Leicester’s cup hero might be moving to the very club who just usurped them. Liverpool are keen on making a move for the Belgium midfielder, seeing his combative style and goalscoring prowess as the ideal replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutch international has just left on a free, leaving a large hole in the Liverpool midfield that, it is believed, Tielemans would be perfect to fill.

The Belgian is within the last two years of his deal. While there was optimism that he would sign a new contract, reports suggest that the player has started to look at options that can give him UCL football once again. The Anderlecht prodigy has slowly but surely rebuilt his reputation to become one of the leading names in the Premier League. A career mistake in a move to a rebuilding AS Monaco left him moving to Leicester as a project with work to do.

His transformation since arriving in England, though, has been sublime – and could see the Belgian look to cash-in and move on.

Why do Liverpool want to sign Youri Tielemans?

For one, he offers them a goalscoring threat from distance and from within the box. His intelligent, ghosting runs would offer a great solution for Liverpool as they look to try and find more ways to score goals from a variety of positions. He also covers a huge amount of ground, making him an ideal fit for the tactically intelligent Wijnaldum’s replacement.

Also, Tielemans offers a youthful style that would work well with a Liverpool midfield who are all approaching or within their peak. His ability to shoot, pass, create, dribble, and intercept makes him the ideal player for a Jurgen Klopp midfield.

Leicester, though, are keen to keep the player and could see a new deal offered regardless. Should that contract be rejected, though, it could open up the opportunity for a team like Liverpool to submit a head-turning bid. Given all that the club has done for Tielemans, though, it would be a shock to see him push for an exit with any vigour.

Liverpool are a massive pull, and missing out on UCL football will definitely complicate matters. Leicester, though, should feel confident they are still in control of the situation. All it takes, though, is one bid and a whole summer can spiral out of control.
